The first session went well last Thursday, so TSE are off and running on the new record! After working through the usual setup of gear and running of cables, we overcame one minor technical issue we encountered with a nice mic preamp of Doug’s and settled into playing. Recording is such a different experience than playing live, much more challenging in some ways, as there is little room for error (at least with rhythm tracks and live drums…and no, we don’t believe in fixing everything in the mix!). And yet the vibe still needs to be dynamic and full of energy. I think there’s a tendency to wanna “play it safe” at first, doing takes that may be technically OK but don’t have that certain quality that’s hard to capture unless everyone in the room is hitting on all cylinders. Given such typical jitters, I think we may have nailed one song down on Thursday night and gotten close on a second. By the time we wrapped up, around 12:30am, we were all pretty spent.

We reconvene tomorrow night and will continue to post progress reports throughout the project. Meanwhile, here’s wishing you a fab 4th of July!
