The title of the post says it all. I mastered the record last week and it went very well, indeed. Keeping in mind that this entire project has been a homespun endeavor and that I was making my first attempts at recording solo using 8-track analog, I’m pleased as punch with the final results. Brent Lambert worked his usual magic with the tracks, and it was a pleasure hanging out again at the Kitchen watching him do his thang.
One of the funniest side notes to the day was overdubbing handclaps on Flat Black and Circular (see/listen to earlier post). When I cut the backing vocal to that song, I was doing the handclaps on the same track–as I did with most of the percussion tracks on the album–simply out of necessity since I didn’t want to bounce down and was limited to 8 tracks total. The posted version of that song is pre-overdubs, so you won’t hear how cheesy my single handclap sounded. Handclaps always sound better when done in groups! So after mentioning to Brent how lame the existing handclaps sounded, we first tried some studio trickery to lay on some digitally triggered claps. That was a bust, and on the way to lunch we acknowledged the fact that we could have gotten what we needed a lot faster simply be recording some handclaps right there, in the mastering room. So Brent, his colleague Kevin, and I gathered ’round a trusty AKG 414-B and had at it. Voila! Thirty minutes later, the tune was getting mastered with proper clappage (to coin a phrase).
I’m gearing up for this weekend’s debut TSE gig in Carrboro and starting to think hard about how I want to release the album. Teaser track coming soon at this site…
